a beautiful pursuit
2011/07/21
Earlier this year I received an email from my friend, John, who was writing to announce that he and a colleague had decided to circumnavigate the Chesapeake Bay Watershed travelling only by bicycle. He plans to leave in one week from Annapolis, MD and travel 1300+ miles crossing the borders of all 6 states whose rivers, creeks and streams flow to the Chesapeake Bay (MD, PA, NY, WV, VA and DE). The course will take approximately 3 weeks for him to complete. Why on earth would anyone do this? I was so moved by his email I feel it’s best to share his words:
“You may be wondering why I would do this. Of all the reasons, these two come to mind first.
In May of 2010 my 5 year old nephew, Caden, was rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). Thanks to the competent and fast work of the staff in the pediatric oncology department of JHU his long term prognosis is very good. To say that our family is eternally grateful to those doctors and nurses would be an understatement. Before Caden’s diagnosis I watched various rides, runs and walks produce hundreds of millions of dollars for cancer research not knowing that they would benefit a loved one in our family. Those funds have been a part of what has led to advancements in cancer treatments that helped save Caden’s life. It is my hope to support the people who continue to improve the survival rates of children with cancer. As Caden continues a 3 year protocol of chemo treatments I hope you will consider supporting the great people of the JHU pediatric oncology department.
And because of the strong link between a healthy body and a healthy environment I am also raising funds to support the education and advocacy programs of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Through my work at CBF I have dedicated the last 13 years to educating students, teachers and CBF members about their connection to their local waters, as well as the health benefits and economic value of clean waterways. Riding through all 6 states of the Chesapeake Bay watershed will allow me, in a very unique way, to continue raising awareness and funds for a cleaner bay with healthier rivers and streams.”

Getting to know Thomas
2011/07/19
Every time I pick up my camera I find myself getting to know the faces on the other side. This is one of my favorite aspects of my job. Imagine my surprise when longtime friends called to book a session for their son who will be graduating in the coming school year. Remembering Thomas as a baby I tried to imagine the kind of young adult he had become… was he going to be camera shy or would he be a total ham? As the shoot progressed I realized I already knew him as I started to see so much of his parents reflected in him. And yet I never would have guessed at his favorite music or interest in history. I can only hope that my own son will also be so much and, in some ways, not so much like me as he matures… and that he won’t get too sick of my camera.

Birth Day
2010/06/04
As I reflect on the past year of my life and the first year of my son’s, I realize just how hard my job really is. As a mom, I am more aware of how short one year actually is and how quickly the next one will pass. As a trigger-happy photographer, I cannot help wanting to preserve each and every moment (an insurmountable task). I have learned that patience is key, balance is everything but adaptability is essential. Making images that will hopefully transcend generations has never been so important to me as it is right now. Since I cannot freeze time, I use my camera so that I might keep a micro-second here and there. The moments I don’t get with my DSLR always get me.
xo,
Nikki
